Who lives in a house like this?

My grandsons came to visit today and were surprised to find a mysterious little door in the skirting board!

It hadn't been there when they were here last. Where did it lead to? Whose front door could it be?

Who lives in a house like this? Why, a House Mouse of course!

I wanted to make something different from a card for a change. I saw this idea years ago, unfortunately can't remember where now. I've been meaning to make one ever since, and finally got round to it. The boys loved it!

Cute Christmas!

Who said that?! Who, me? Nah, couldn't have been me. I don't do cute. Avoid it like the plague. And I never do Christmas before December.

What's that you say? The card? What card? Oh! How did that get there? No idea. Never seen it before. (Cue nonchalant whistle.) Are you sure you're at the right blog? Well, it's ok, I suppose, but you wouldn't catch me doing something like that! The owls are rather, er....cute, though.....I guess.....

You know I don't do cute. But who could resist this little quartet?

Four young tree sparrows all cuddled up together on a branch in our back garden. They remind me of an illustration in a children's book, and here they are in real life.

A little Inspiration

I loved looking at all the gorgeous entries for the Take Flight theme, but it's now September already, which means it's time for a new challenge at Stampalot, and this month we have some

Your creation can be anything you like as long as it is inspired by the photo. It would also be helpful to us if you could say in what way the photo inspired you.

For my card, I took inspiration from the woman and child, and the flowers they are holding. I used a picture from a Crafty Individuals book, mounted onto a Nestie frame which was stamped with Rubber Stamp Tapestry stamps, to echo the design on the background paper, which was a freebie from Quick Cards Made Easy magazine. I made some lace into a flower and topped it with a floral button. The sentiment is by Waltzing Mouse.

We have lots of gorgeous entries coming in for this month's Stampalot Challenge, which is "Take Flight". I thought I'd show you a few more of my butterfly cards, all using the beautiful butterfly stamps by Prickley Pear.

Crafts shops are a bit thin on the ground up here in Dumfriesshire. One of the few things I miss about Nottingham is that there are several good shops within reasonable travelling distance of where I used to live. However,  I found the beautiful floral button (on the card above) in a lovely shop called Fun 2 Do in Carlisle. They have the most gorgeous selection of buttons, ribbons, fabrics and general crafty bits and pieces, and I've just found out they have a website and do mail order! Driving back out of Carlisle I also noticed that there is a brand new Hobbycraft store being built there, due to open very soon! Oases in the craft desert! I'm happy now!

Things with wings

The theme for August's Stampalot Challenge is right up my street! It's

TAKE FLIGHT

Now that should give plenty of scope - birds, insects, fairies, angels, or even aeroplanes spring to mind -  but for me it just has to be my favourite subject, butterflies!

I've been a bit awol over the past few weeks, busy with various things which have kept me away from blogging (some of which were crafty stuff, but more about that another time!) but I did manage to make my butterfly cards.

For the first one the butterflies are from a Hero Arts Framelits set. I've stamped them on to printed papers from Crafty Individuals (Book 3 Springtime) and then cut them out with the Framelits die included in the set. I've used the same papers for the centre circle, and for the banner (banner stamp by Waltzing Mouse and butterfly word by Crafty Individuals). The doily is by Cheery Lynn.

My second card showcases one of my latest acquisitions, by Prickley Pear, which is fast becoming one of my all-time favourite butterfly stamps, along with the others in the set!

Here the butterfly has alighted on a background of Trimcraft papers ("Neighbourwood" by Helz Cuppleditch) with an Aspects of Design (by The Stampman) Nestie frame stamp, sentiment by The Craft's Meow, and ribbon from my stash. The butterfly has a matching die (available separately) which makes cutting it out so easy.

There are two different sets of the Prickley Pear butterflies, and I have to confess I bought them both! How could I have resisted when they are all so beautiful? You'll be seeing plenty more of them in the not too distant future!

But back to August at Stampalot Challenge. The prize is fabulous, as usual.

My lovely teamies have come up with some absolutely gorgeous designs, so do pop over to the Challenge Blog for plenty of inspiration. I have a feeling that this month's theme is going to be very popular, and I'm looking forward to seeing lots of winged things, butterflies or not!

Highlight of my day!

I absolutely loved Paula Whittaker's article in this month's Craft Stamper (issue August 2012). Such a brilliantly simple idea! She has used ordinary highlighter pens & Distress Ink to make fabulous backgrounds. I couldn't wait to try out the technique.

Here's what I made.

I used Inkylicious Satin Silk ArtCard for the highlighter backgrounds, and stamps by Inkylicious and IndigoBlu.

If you haven't yet got your Craft Stamper, you can see a gorgeous bonus project by Paula on the Craft Stamper website, though you'll have to buy the mag to get the instructions for the technique. Well worth it, I reckon! I had a lot of fun doing it.

Crafty Passions

Time for another Stampalot Challenge, and this month we want to know

What's Your Crafty Passion?

Are you mad about markers, desperate for Distress Inks, a sucker for stamping, or potty about punches? Do you have a favourite technique/colour combo/subject? Whatever you can't live without in your crafting, showcase it on your project, and tell us what it is.

My crafty passions (well, the ones I've managed to fit on my card at least!) are butterflies, Distress Inks, my Cuttlebug and resist techniques.

I stamped the butterfly (by Inkylicious, as is the sentiment) with Versamark ink to act as the resist, and then sponged over the background with the Spring limited edition Distress Inks (love those colours!) The diecut butterfly is made with two dies by Memory Box, and the border is from the Spellbinders Parisian Accents set.

The prize this month won't disappoint. An eclectic mix of gorgeous goodies with which to feed your crafty passions, generously donated as ever by Sir and Lady Stampalot who are definitely passionate about their craft.

Rhododendrons

Looking from my craftroom window, I can see distant splashes of bright pink rhododendrons.

They have made a glorious display this year. I wanted to represent them on a card, but didn't have a suitable image. However, I needed to look no further to find one than amongst my lovely Stampalot teamie Ruth's gorgeous digi designs. Here's how I've used it.

An easel card cut with a Nestie Blossom 3 die. The background papers are from Crafty Individuals (Book 3 - Springtime. I just love the colours in this set, and the prints are so pretty. Note to Jean and Malcolm - please don't discontinue this book!) Butterflies by Hero Arts, and sentiment by Inkylicious (from their new Hydrangea set). Watercolour pencils for colouring.

Flaming June??!

Not up here in Bonnie Scotland it ain't! Cold and wet describes it pretty well. We couldn't bring ourselves to put the heating on when it's practically midsummer, but the winter woollies are much in evidence.

We are lucky enough to live within sight of a river, which is an endless source of fascination. Over the past few weeks, because the weather has been uncommonly dry, the water level has been lower than usual. We have had some idyllic walks along the riverbank of an evening. Just thought I would show you a few photos.

However, for the past 24 hours it has rained virtually nonstop. Where the river normally looks like this.....

....it now looks like this!

Talking of currents, it is amazing, not to say frightening, how quickly the water level rises and how fast it flows, but it can also go down equally quickly. I took the photos around lunchtime today, and the water continued to rise over the afternoon. From our lounge window it looks more like a lake. It has just stopped raining now, and unless there is more rain overnight, I will expect to see the water back within its banks by tomorrow morning. * (See Edit 2, below) The speed and quantity of the flow does not seem to have much effect on the wildlife though. When I went down to take the photos, this mother goose and her four youngsters were pottering about quite happily, and they didn't seem to have any trouble staying where they wanted to!

I am pleased to note that the weather forecast for tomorrow is dry!

Edit: I went out again this evening at about 9.30 to see how things had changed. The water was considerably higher than at lunchtime, as the following photos show.

However, as you can see, the sky had cleared quite a bit and the sun peeped out for a little while before it set, so it may well be a better day tomorrow.

Edit 2: The river was indeed back in its rightful place this morning (Sunday), albeit still high and having left big puddles in the fields.
